Yoke
A yoke is a wooden beam normally placed on a pair of bullocks or other animals to enable them to pull a load together.
Chaff Cutter
A chaff cutter is used to cut hay into small pieces to be used for animal feed.
Sharpening Stone
The grinding or sharpening stone was turned, either by hand or foot, in order to sharpen household and farming implements.
Kitchen Scales
Kitchen balance scales were used to weigh cooking ingredients such as flour, sugar and butter.
Wheat Grinder
An implement that attached to the kitchen table and was used to grind wheat into flour.
Typewriter
A typewriter is a machine that produces letters and numbers on paper when the user strikes a key.
Solar panels charge an energizer battery which can last up to 3 weeks without sun. It has a voltage rating of 7 kV and can power a single wire fence up to 16 km in length.
Pen and Ink
Pen and ink were used by students for writing on paper. The ink was stored in an ink well that sat in a hole in the desk. Absorbent blotting paper was used to soak up drips of ink.
Inspection
Before students were permitted to enter the classroom, the teacher would conduct an inspection to ensure their hands and nails were clean and their clothes neat and tidy.
The Cane
In the early years all teachers had, and were permitted to use, a cane as a form of punishment for both girls and boys. The cane was used to strike children who had misbehaved or failed to learn. Children were most often hit on the buttocks, palms or the backs of hands.
In Tasmania it became illegal for girls to be caned in Government schools in 1937. Principals and nominated head teachers were the only ones allowed to give the cane to the boys after this time. Gradually corporal punishment decreased until the Tasmanian Government made it illegal in 1999.
The Dunce’s Hat
The dunce hat was used in classrooms as a way of belittling children who were slow to grasp new concepts or ideas. Made to sit on a stool at the front of the room or stand in the corner, the Dunce Hat would be placed on their head in order to embarrass them.
Hagley School
The original Hagley School building was opened in 1865. It was built on 2 acres of land donated by Sir Richard Dry and cost 350 pounds to construct. Originally the school had a house for the principal attached to the eastern end, but this was demolished in 1969.
Wool Table
A slatted table which the fleece is thrown over to remove (skirt) the dirty wool.
Wool Press
A machine which can be manual, electric or hydraulic. The wool press used to compress wool into a sack/ bale in order to make it suitable for transportation.
Dust bath
A chicken having a dust bath is like us having a shower. The dust helps to keep them free of lice, mites and other parasites.
