A bit further down the slope, there's a lot deeper richer top soil, higher in organic matter. This is the sort of tree foresters will try to grow - it's tall, straight and growing at a good rate per year.

An old regrowth tree retained by previous grazier for shade for the cattle. It's gained a good size and has developed hollows in the branches that are good nesting sites for birds, mammals and other organisms. Although these bigger trees effect surrounding trees and slow their growth, they are very important in the environment to allow habitat for all those animals that live and breed in them to remain.

Hi, I’m Rachael Cavanagh and I work for the Aboriginal Partnerships team for Forestry Corporation.
I’m really lucky to be in this position as we get to engage with the local Traditional Owners to come out and manage their cultural heritage sites and put in their own prescriptions around how they want that site managed.
Some of the exciting things we get to do in our job is work together with indigenous communities to connect them back to country, pre- and post-harvesting survey work, as well as work with communities to get them out in here to record and manage their sacred sites, I get to record some sites that are over 10,000 years old - anything from artefacts, scar trees, to large campsites and artworks in caves - and that’s pretty amazing.

Looking down on the forest from this height, you can see there is minimal disruption to the rest of the forest during these selective harvesting operations.
After careful sustainable forest planning, only selected trees are removed from the forest.
Sustainable forest management is the key to managing forests for the long term with forest inventory and surveys, helping to ensure that the trees that show features for wildlife habitat, like nesting hollows, remain in the forest.
In this native forest, the small gaps now created through selective harvesting, will be regenerated to the original forest species mix, to start the forest cycle again.

Modern harvesters are highly technical with scanners and computer systems. They’re all hydraulically driven and the grapples holding on the trunk, can also help hold and guide the tree, to fall in the best place to -minimise damage to the surrounding bush.

Recent rainfall makes it a good time to plant the seedlings, because moist soil will sustain them until it rains again.
This team is walking through pre-formed rows, to plant thousands of seedlings by hand.
As the trees grow, they’ll collect and store carbon from the air, helping fight climate change.

Rocky ridge area - much of the top soil will have washed down to the bottom of the ridge. There's lower soil moisture content. Scar Trees are trees that have had bark removed by indigenous Australians for the creation of bark canoes, shelters, shields and containers, such as coolamons. They are among the easiest-to-find archaeological sites in Australia.
Bark was removed by making deep cuts in a tree with a stone pick-axe or other similar tool. Australian native Eucalypt species such as box and red gum were commonly used, and the scars remain in trees that are often over 200 years old. It can be rectangular, square, diamond, etc.
Scarred trees are significant evidence of Aboriginal occupation and can provide information on Aboriginal activities in the area that they are located.

Sustainable Forest Certification requires a lot of paperwork and tracking of individual trees that leave forests. This truck driver is holding a hand held scanner that scans a barcode that has been stapled to the ends of each log. This scanner is connected with an inventory list of trees that gives their trucks load of logs information including location and species. The mill will then receive this data to then also pass on through its chain of custody to ensure that every piece of timber they process, can be sustainable timber certified.
There are 2 certification schemes in Australia: Responsible Wood (PEFC) and FSC. Read more here: https://www.agriculture.gov.au/forestry/australias-forests/certification

Taking a look around this inventory plot, you’ll see a forester doing some forest measurements for planning.
Using her diameter tape, she records tree diameter measurements into her tablet.
To measure the height of the trees in this plot, she points a laser beam from a tool called a vertex, which tells her the tree is 20.3 meters tall.

The seeds are then driven in here, the covered growing area, where they’ll be kept moist until they germinate.
Once they’ve germinated, they’ll be taken out into the nursery.

Thinning is the process of removing poorer formed trees in a plantation forest that are acting as competition for sunlight, nurtrients and water with the best trees. By removing them at this stage, it allows the best formed trees to grow and thrive.

Trees are starting to gain growth even in 18 months. Grass is being controlled by slashing until cattle can be reintroduced after 2 years old.
